I will present five selections from my recently released album “Voice of the Saxophone”, a collection of lieder and art song arranged for alto saxophone and piano. I am also making available a book of arrangements of each of these pieces. “Voice of the Saxophone” seeks to show the vocal, lyrical possibilities of the instrument. Assisting me in the presentation will be mezzo-soprano Megan Ihnen. She will also perform with me the world premiere of Alan Theisen’s “An Die Musik”, a piece for mezzo-soprano voice, alto saxophone, and piano specifically commissioned for the project. Through close study of the lyrical settings and vocal performance practice, we will demonstrate ways of interpreting these songs from a vocalist’s perspective.
